In a packed conference room in Jamaica Queens, N.Y., Anthony Chima was elected and sworn in as the association's next president, to right the affairs of the sinking organization, ran aground by its former president, Kan Ottah.
In his maiden speech thanking the members for the confidence they have in him to steer the affairs of the once respected and revered association to its greener pastures, Chima said, "make no mistake about it, I have invested so much in this association, and so have many others, and if there is anybody that has misappropriated our funds, we are not going to fold our hands and do nothing. We will bring that person to book, and restore the integrity of our organization."
The former president, Ottah, has been mired in controversies over the years about his divisive and autocratic way of running the association, vis-a-vis changing the organization's corporate address from the State of Maryland to the State of Georgia, where he resides, and changing the association's bank address, without authorization.
He has also breached the association's protocols by writing the financial secretary's, treasurer's, and the building committee chairman's reports, and also trying to influence the office of the general secretary by dictating what he wants to be in, or out of the minutes from previous meetings.
He authorizes and disburses funds for himself without house approval, and refuses to show accountability or give cogent account of his stewardship when questioned.
Though all his executives have handed over their records, Ottah has refused to hand over power, despite the expiration of his mandate in November 2017.
In the other election results to make up the seven-member executive cabinet, the following were elected:
Chukwuemeka Chima (no relation to Anthony) - Vice President;
Sunday Okam - General Secretary;
Okoro Kama Ude - Financial Secretary;
Polite Ukpai Isu - Treasurer (unopposed);
Uka Okoro Onuma - Publicity Secretary; and
Uchechukwu Eburu - Provost.
The team was sworn in by Hon. Jude Nkama, Judge of the Municipal Court of Newark, N.J., and blessed in prayers by Rev. Father Nicholas Ibe, who charged them to execute the duties of their offices with brevity and the fear of God.
